Animation doesn't sell movies but products?

I always thought animation made the most money: the movies. But in actuality, it is the merchandise that really makes the studios the most money. I guess that makes sense since most adults won't go to a Disney movie by themselves but would go to the store and buy a Disney book bag for their child by themselves.
